It’s not just about getting a job; Apprenticeships are about your career. Because the skills you are gaining as a result of your placement are directly relevant to the workplace, progression is generally much quicker than for other employees. If that’s not enough of an incentive for you, then how about the fact that the average lifetime wage of an apprentice is over £100,000 more than those who go straight into employment? Don’t feel you’re closed in once you decide to undertake an Apprenticeship either. UCAS now accepts Apprenticeships as a recognised route into university, so if you decide you want to pursue academic qualifications in the future, you still have the option available to you.

Intermediate Apprenticeships

The basic level of Apprenticeship, Intermediate placements are usually undertaken by school leavers at 16. They are the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at A*-C grade. Apprentices usually work towards a knowledge-based qualification, such as a BTEC, and will gain a work-based learning qualification, for example an NVQ Level 2.
Advanced Apprenticeships

Usually undertaken by those who have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship, or those with 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Advanced Apprenticeships are the equivalent to two A-level passes. The higher level is reflected in a higher level work-based learning qualification, e.g. NVQ Level 3. BTECs are also often worked towards.
Higher Apprenticeships

Seen as the main alternative to university and higher education, Higher Apprenticeships are usually equivalent to a foundation degree, but can go as far as to equal a masters. An NVQ Level 4 or a similar alternative is usually worked towards, with BTECs also being common. A Higher Apprenticeship can also include a degree qualification as part of the placement.
